IT will
cost an estimated RM222mil to implement the Goods and
Services Tax (GST), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
He
said in a written reply to Teo Nie Ching (DAP-Serdang) that the
Government had set aside an allocation in its effort to ensure the
smooth and orderly implementation of GST.
“The
preliminary cost
to implement the GST includes RM139mil for computerisation and RM83mil
as operational costs for the Customs Department to be the implementing
agency,” said Najib, who is also the Finance Minister.
Teo had
asked about the estimated costs that the Government would have to bear
for the first five years of the GST implementation.
The
Bill for
the GST, first tabled in Parliament last December, was set for a second
reading in March this year, but it was postponed as the Government
wanted to get more public feedback.
Earlier,
Transport Minister
Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said the new Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT)
would have a 3.6km long runway with parking facilities for 76 aircrafts
and 6,000 vehicles.
“An
express rail link service will be
constructed to connect the new LCCT and the main terminal of the KL
International Airport.
The new
LCCT can handle up to 30 million
people per year,” he told Datuk Seri Tengku Azlan Sultan Abu Bakar (BN -
Jerantut).
He said
once the new terminal was completed in the
first quarter of 2012, the old terminal in Sepang would be converted
into a cargo terminal capable of handling 320,335 tonnes of cargo
annually.
“This
means that overall, the cargo capacity of the
KLIA will be increased to 1.31mil tonnes per year,” he said.
