Malaysia June factory output improves 1pc [ 11-08-2011 ]

 The Industrial Production Index (IPI) in June 2011 increased one per cent as compared with the same month last year. 

Month-on-month, the June 2011 IPI increased 3.5 per cent, the Department of Statistics Malaysia said in its IPI report for the month. 

The increment in June 2011 was due to increases in the manufacturing index (4.5 per cent) and electricity index (3.6 per cent). 

However, the index for mining posted a decrease of 8.6 per cent.


The IPI from January-June 2011 recorded a positive growth of 0.4 per cent as compared with the same period of 2010. 

Manufacturing output in June 2011 grew 4.5 per cent as against the same month last year. 

The growth for the second quarter 2011 increased by 2.1 per cent as compared with the same quarter of last year. 

The increase in the manufacturing output in June 2011 was due to increases in the group of petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products (9.2 per cent), non-metallic mineral products, basic metal and fabricated metal products (18.3 per cent) and food, beverages and tobacco products ( nine per cent). 

The output for the mining sector decreased 8.6 per cent in June 2011 as compared with the same month of 2010. 

This was due to a decrease in the index for crude oil by 15.6 per cent. 

However, the natural gas index increased by seven per cent. 

For the second quarter of 2011, the mining sector recorded a decrease of 11.7 per cent as compared with the same period of last year. 

Electricity output increased 3.6 per cent in June 2011 as compared with the same month last year. 

Electricity generation for the second quarter of 2011 increased 1.3 per cent as compared with the same period of 2010.--Bernama
