Doorstep to provide online sales platform for SMEs [ 15-09-2011 ]

E-commerce firm Doorstep Retails expects to have between 500 and 1,000 small- to medium-sized enterprises signed up on the online mall, via www.doorstep.com.my, by the end of next year.

KUALA LUMPUR: E-commerce firm Doorstep Retails Sdn Bhd will open a "Virtual Mall" in the second or third quarter of next year, providing an online platform for small- to-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to sell their products and services.

The move will allow SMEs to instantly reach a wider market, chief executive officer Datuk Ragavan Nair said.

"We provide a very simple, user-friendly system where they can post the products themselves, manage the inventory and so on. By putting their products online with us, they have an instant nationwide reach," he said.

He expects to have between 500 and 1,000 SMEs signed up on the online mall, via www.doorstep.com.my, by the end of next year.

The initiative, which falls under the government's Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), is a move forward from Doorstep's current business of selling groceries and lifestyle products like shoes online.

It currently has over 100 SMEs signed up on its website.

Delivery for groceries, which include those supplied by Kedai 1Malaysia, is only within the Klang Valley. Customers have to make a minimum purchase of RM100 and are charged a delivery fee of between RM1 and RM5.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, in announcing new ETP initiatives here yesterday, said Doorstep is expected to invest RM35 million on this project and create 1,000 new jobs by 2020.

"At the moment, it's internally generated funds and private funding," Ragavan told reporters after the event, when asked where the funds would come from.

Ragavan and his wife, who is also co-founder of the firm, are among the key owners of Doorstep.

Doorstep, which started business in March last year, expects to reap a "seven-figure" monthly revenue by the end of this year, he said. Besides product sales, it also garners revenue from advertisements on its website.

The website currently gets between 30,000 and 50,000 hits a month.
